Use of film packaging with recycled material – What happens next?
Use of film packaging with recycled material – What’s next?
Highlights of the presentations
Presentation by Cihat Langguth:
Cihat Langguth from Der Grüne Punkt talked about the role of waste collection and sorting in the production of PCR materials. He emphasised:
- The increasing demand for recycled materials and the improvement in quality.
- The steadily increasing quality due to process improvements in recycling.
- The importance of cooperation between different players in the supply chain.
- The challenges and opportunities of using PCR materials from household waste.
Presentation by Mika Sang:
Mika Sang, Duo-Plast, presented the progress and challenges in the use of PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) materials in the packaging industry using the example of stretch hoods and stretch wrap films. He emphasised the following points:
- The 2016 Ellen MacArthur Foundation study and the introduction of the new plastic economy.
- The European Green Deal and the PPWR (Plastic Packaging Waste Regulation) with the aim of being climate-neutral by 2050.
- The introduction of the plastic tax in the UK and the new benchmarks for PCR content in packaging.
- The development and improvement of PCR stretch films, including the introduction of a film with 65 % PCR content.
- The challenges of integrating PCR from household waste into existing packaging systems.
Presentation by Bernd Buesing:
Bernd Buesing from Nestlé Germany talked about Nestlé’s vision and commitments in relation to sustainable packaging. He emphasised:
- Nestlé’s global vision is that no packaging, including plastic, ends up as waste in the environment or in landfill.
- The commitment to design 95 % of plastic packaging for recycling or reuse by 2025.
- Reducing the use of virgin plastic by a third by 2025.
- The five pillars of Nestlé’s sustainability strategy: less packaging, better packaging, better systems, behavioural change and collaboration along the supply chain.
The participants also took the opportunity to ask their questions – here is a typical example from the discussion round.
Participant question:
Question: “What role can paper play in securing pallets?”
Answer from Cihat Langguth: “That’s a very good question. I know that some trials are underway. I’m sceptical when you consider the properties of paper and the stress on a pallet, but you should never say never. We’ll have to see how things develop.”
This Inno-Talk demonstrated the importance of collaboration and continuous innovation in order to develop and implement sustainable packaging solutions. The projects and discussions presented provide valuable insights into the challenges and progress in the industry.
